Making Merry Monday

IMG_9384A friend told me this weekend just past that there are 8 weeks until Christmas.  Is anyone else as shocked by that little gem of information as I am?  OMG - that's not long is it.

Without further ado, here's a card that I was going to teach in a Glitter class.  Yes I am going to say WAS because this class is doomed I think!  I've had to cancel it so many times for all sorts of reasons, so I am thinking it is a sign - this class isn't meant to happen :o(

IMG_9386
Here's a close up of the sparkliness (yes a new word for the 2011 festive season). And how do we do that?

Well you stamp your image first.  Then take your Versamark pad and stamp this over the image - straight onto the cardstock - not onto the stamp - you need to cover the cardstock completely.  (Tip: I tend to stamp several images on one piece of cardstock and then Versamark and glitterise (not sure that is a real word either) the whole lot at the same time).

Cover the whole piece of card with some Heat and Stick powder - use a heat gun to melt this.  When the powder is moulton, sprinkle over Dazzling Diamonds.  Tap off the excess and heat again.  (Tip:  just a little flash of the heat gun this time - we are just setting the Dazzling Diamonds not melting it).

IMG_9445
Hey presto you have some lovely sparkly pieces to make into cards.

This card uses the Delightful Decorations set and matching Ornament punch. Using a matching stamp and punch means you can churn a few of these out in double quick time - just what we need with only 8 weeks left to go!  The swirl is from Baroque Motifs.

Happy Making Merry Monday.

Big Shot Blog Hop

Yes it's that time once again for another blog hop -  this time show casing the lovely Big Shot - one of my favourite tools.  There are  six stops along the way - grab a cuppa and hop on board for some lovely inspiration.

IMG_0041

My most favourite die is the Timeless Type alphabet - being a scrapbooker I love that I can create any title I like.  I took a tip from Tina Gillespie (the hop before me)  and 'chopped off the curly bits' to change the style of the letters - what a fab idea.

IMG_0034
I also love the versatility of the embossing folders.  Just on this scrapbooking page alone I have used both the alphabet and three embossing folders.   IMG_0033

Embossing cardstock and papers is a cheap and easy way to change their look and feel.

IMG_0035
Hop along now to see the lovely Sue Madex - she's been absent from our hops for a little bit and we've missed her.

Just have to finish this post with a close up on my boy, did he really look like this once?  Was he really this little and cute?

Happy hopping and big shotting!

Shabby Chic Flowers

IMG_0024I was a little late with this birthday card.  A lovely class and workshop friend of mine, Tracey, has recently celebrated her birthday - and a slight technical hitch (I have brithdays loaded into my calendar on my phone but sometimes the reminders don't work - operator error of course) - meant that this ended up being a little belated!

IMG_0027Tracey creates the most beautiful cards and scrapbooking pages so the pressure was on to make something I didn't think she had seen before.

These flowers really are simple to make - the way the cardstock acts when you spray it with water and scrunch it up is amazing - I think Tracey will like the end result.

So happy belated birthday Tracey.

Field Flowers

This is another one of those sets that as soon as I saw the new catalogue I knew would be in my collection very soon.  Inspired by the cover of the new book, I made the following card.

IMG_9991
I've dipped into the new In Colour range - Calypso Coral and Lucky Limeade, teamed with Very Vanilla and Early Espresso.

The swirly background stamp is from the Creative Elements set - its quite a useful set with this swirly stamps, a butterfly, a flower and a few other stamps too.  The First Edition Speciality papers are great to stamp on - I've highlighted the centres of the flowers using Dimensionals to.

IMG_9992
I decorated the inside of the card too.  The flower parts are separate stamps, and I used the Stamp-a-Ma-Jig to line everything up perfectly.

Happy Stampin'

Making Merry Monday

IMG_0020
Welcome to another Making Merry Monday.  I have been wanting to make these lovely flowers for a few months now.  So I 'invested' in a couple of punches and here's my first attempt.  I love it!

IMG_0021Who would have thought that wetting and scrunching cardstock would have resulted in such a lovely shabby chic flower?  Yes it really is just water and cardstock!  And when you've finished scrunching and squeezing you just add a spritz of Shimmer Mist and leave the whole lot to dry overnight - amazing.

So today's Christmas card is made with Cherry Cobbler cardstock, Mocha Morning speciality papers (this one is flocked and is lovely), and a piece of Whisper White which has been run through the Vintage Vogue folder.

Making Merry Monday 2011

IMG_9955
With it being October now - I thought it would be a good time to bring back Making Merry Monday. MMM was invented by Anita Meade a few years ago and the idea is that you post a Christmas idea every Monday (or you could reword that last sentence to read 'Nik is going to be super organised and have all her cards made in good time this year' LOL).  Here's the first one.

When I saw this set in the new catalogue it was top of my 'had to buy it now' list.  Beautiful Season is great for watercolouring and the little bird can be made into a little robin very easily.  The little sentiments in the set fit perfectly with some of the punches too, this will make it easy to mass produce cards if you need to - I'll have a sample or two to show you very soon.

Have you seen the new sparkles in the catalogue this year?  Glass Glitter (page 145) is so lovely, and I've used Sticky Strip to glue it into place.  And isn't the new Stripes embossing folder lovely - very Christmassy I thought.

What this space for more Christmas card ideas - this is the month to make a couple extra and donate them to a good cause - I make and collect cards the Defence forces serving overseas - if you have any cards you'd like to donate also please get in touch.

Happy Stampin'

New Catalogue Swaps

IMG_9952If you read my OLW post of a couple of days ago you'll have read about these swaps that I made.  I've used the Just Add Cake DSP, Baja Breeze, So Saffron and Peach Parfait.

IMG_9950I've used a scoring tool to make the little pinwheel or lolly, I am keeping my fingers crossed that we see the new Stampin' Up! Scoring Tool in the Summer Mini which will be released on 1 December.

Not overly happy with these, but very happy that I finally completed the task.

Happy stampin!

Simply Stockings Promotion

AUNZ_SimplyStockings_LP_B1Have you seen the Simply Stockings' Promotion?  This really is too good to be true.
This lovely set is going to feature in the Summer Mini which releases on 1 December.  Yes, I know that doesn't give you a lot of time to use it to make Christmas cards, so Stampin' Up! are giving you two ways to receive this lovely set and punch during the month of October.

Do you want to receive it for FREE?  Of course you do!

All you have to do is host a workshop, reach $450 in sales and you'll receive both the punch (value $33.95) and the 7 piece Simply Stockings set (value in wood $53.95 or $42.95 for clear mount) as a gift.

This doesn't affect your hostess dollars either, you'll still receive $60 to spend on whatever you like in the catalogue - WOW.  That adds up to $147.95 worth of freebies for holding a qualifying workshop this month (or $136.90 if you choose the clear mount option).

So hands up who wants to host a workshop?  Call me - I'm taking bookings :o)

Th_simply_stockings_en-AUClick on the image above if you want a close up of the stamp set.

So I said there were two ways to get your hands on this set didn't I.  The other way is to purchase the set and or punch yourself this month.  If you don't want to hold a workshop that's okay - you can join in the fun too.

Workshops and / or orders have to be placed by close of business on 31 October.  Call or email me if you want this set.

Happy Stampin!

Stampamemory Challenge - October 2011 - Fears

The Design Team from Stampamemory are you challenging you again this month.  October's challenge is to produce a layout highlighting your fears.

Being on the DT means you see this list way ahead of time so I had plenty of opportunity to wonder how I would deal with this.  I've wanted to document my fear for a long time; but I didn't want to include any pictures - this was about the fear, not the thing itself - and if you have the same fear, there are no pictures so you can read on :o)

IMG_9976
I wanted to create a 'raw' feeling to my layout, so I've used the lovely new Well Worn DSP pack.  The flower was created by tearing circles of paper, squishing them up, attacking them with a sanding block and then I attached them all together with a now retired eyelet.

IMG_9974 (Don't strain your eyes .... I've added the journalling to the end of  this post).

The layout itself was quick to create, the papers do all the work I think.  the writing took ages but I am really pleased I have documented this important event.

Stampamemory are challenging you to document your fears, enter the challenge by uploading your layout here.

If you are interested in Emotional Freedom Training - check out Jenny's website.

Happy scrapbooking!

And the journalling reads:

All my life I have had a fear of snakes.  My mother has the same fear, my grandmother too.  Growing up in England this didn’t matter that much, moving to Australia changed all of that.

Even the word would send shivers down my spine; I was determined not to pass this fear on to my children (or perhaps I should be honest and say Paul was determined J - I thought I was quite rational really).  After all no-one likes them right!

Billboards, children’s books, furry or plastic toys, Harry Potter movies, Allen’s lollies, photos in magazines that had to be put in the bin outside, reptile houses at the zoo (I stood outside and waited for the family – not understanding the fascination).  Animal encounter days at school made me want to scrub the kids clean if they told me they had touched one. I know completely irrational.

Arriving in Australia heightened this phobia, now there was a real chance of actually seeing one, what would I do?  I used to scour the garden beds from the kitchen window before venturing out into the garden.  I wouldn’t dare to open news articles incase they included a picture and as for Steve Urwin (the children were fascinated by him), well I thought he was just weird!

Then one day I saw a baby Dugite in Port Kennedy, WA.  We were out riding our bikes, me gripping the handlebars so tight my knuckles were white as we rode on a bike path through the sand dunes – Paul was ahead with Olivia, KP a little bit behind them. And there it was, KP had gotten off his bike and was screaming, I could do nothing, I couldn’t scream or run to help him – I froze to the spot.  We went home immediately and I had a panic attack – it took me ages to calm down. I was so scared; I couldn’t believe I couldn’t help my kids.

It sounds dramatic but my fear really was taking over my life.

Fast forward a year or so and we move back to Melbourne.

I wanted to seek some help but my biggest hurdle was how would they know I was cured?  Would they test me before I left? I couldn’t bring myself to look for help; everywhere I looked had pictures of snakes.

One day my friend Tracy offers to help.  She tells me her sister-in-law can hypnotize me.  She makes the appointment, doesn’t listen to my excuses why I can’t go, comes to collect me. She says she will be with me the whole time, I’m not happy but I do trust my friend.

On the way Tracy tells me about Emotional Freedom Techniques – talk about weird.  I’m sat there thinking I just want to ‘put to sleep’ and wake up cured!  As I sat there wondering what have I let myself in for, she must have been feeling the same!

Jenny was amazing.  EFT is amazing.  Within a couple of hours I could hold a picture of a snake, pick up and eat an Allen’s snake lolly without feeling it was going to reform in my tummy, and I finally left with a new toy, a plastic snake.  It wasn’t a walk in the park; it took over two hours, most of spent in tears, tapping various parts of my body. But it really did only take two hours to ‘cure’ me.

When Tracy took me home with the toy snake in my hand Paul nearly passed out.  Visiting the reptile house at Melbourne zoo with the Petries freaked him out too.  He had hold of my hand so tightly in case I ran screaming in fright (yes I had done that in the past in – and that was just toy snakes in shops – very embarrassing).

Now I can live without worrying, yes I am wary, yes I ‘tap’ when I feel the level of fear in my tummy start to rise, but it soon puts it to rest.  Several years later I still ‘test’ the therapy, every zoo we visit always includes the reptile house, I am fascinated by the way a snake moves. I still freak my Paul out, he still holds onto my hand for dear life!

Do I love them?  NO.  Do I want to own one?  No.  Do I want to find one in my back garden? NO.  Do I even like them?  Nope!

But what I do know is that if I was faced with my worst fear, I could deal with it. I’d be tapping my cheek like a mad woman, but I could rescue the children.  I could still be in control of the situation.  And best of all, the children are not afraid.

Mission accomplished!

One on 1 - Time To Choose a Battle

One on 1 Blog Button
Welcome to another One on 1.  Thanks again to Margie for keeping us all in step.  Warning this is a long post - lots of waffle ... sorry!

Ali Edwards really made me think this month - to choose a battle and let go of another.

Sunday 25 September I had an epiphany – it involved a mailbox and an armful of envelopes.

Auspostmail On 13 July I committed to take part in a swap showcasing the new ideas book and catalogue.  To cut a very long story short, finally last weekend, 34 days late, I changed the design time and time again as I struggled with the task and then sat for several hours and made all of the swaps.  I ticked the job off my list and instantly felt the release – already I was feeling my creating mojo returning – it had been lost for the whole of the month.  I packaged them all and popped the dogs on the lead and set off for the mailbox.

As the lid snapped shut with a loud bang (what is it with Aussie mailboxes – I often feel like I am going to lose a hand when I post a bulky item) taking with it 34 days of worry and stress it suddenly struck me.   What would it feel like to 'post' my one permanent goal in life.

As I continued on my walk with the dogs I likened this experience to that of the one thing in my life I want to CHANGE.  The whole reason I started on this journey in the first place.  Yes I was committed, yes sometimes things in my life do, and will, become more important than the task itself, yes I make this task much larger than it needs to be, and yes I have heaps and heaps of excuses as to why I haven’t achieved my goal …. But honestly …. I just need to buckle down stop whinging and get on with it.

What would I feel like if I achieved the goal that is always top of my list – the mountain I have tried to climb for about the last 20 years and have never quite got to the top of, what would it feel like to be living a healthy lifestyle, to shed the unwanted and unloved excess kilos, and more importantly exercise was as much of my daily routine as preparing fresh meals every day or brushing my teeth?

Yes it really did take a few swaps and a deadline for me to reach this point.  The expectations, letting friends down, receiving my pack of swaps knowing that I hadn’t kept my side of the bargain, the unfinished task, I’d let all of it overwhelmed me.

So in asking myself, what would it feel like to be healthy and fit. To not stress if sometimes takeaway is all I have the energy for. To enjoy a glass of wine or coffee and cake with a friend without thinking I'm too fat to eat this ... or I shouldn't be eating this.

What would I feel like if I achieved the goal that is always top of my list – the mountain I have tried to climb for about the last 20 years and have never quite got to the top of, if exercise was as much of my daily routine as preparing fresh meals every day or brushing my teeth?

I would be free to conquer another goal wouldn’t I! How cool would that be?  To have another goal in my life to focus on!  How far would that sense of achievement empower me to achieve other great things?

Food for thought as I drag myself out of bed at 5.45am each morning to honour my date with the treadmill
J

Weight lost so far during 2011 – 11kgs (or 24lbs or 1.7 stones depending on where you live) – okay healthy lifestyle – you are the chosen battle for the rest of 2011 – this is it!

Australia Post snailAnd whilst looking for pictures of an Aussie mailbox as mailboxes tend to differ around the world and some of you may not understand how much clanging happens here when you post bulky items LOL – I found this great image – isn’t it just perfect.

I now have several of these little images stuck in prominent positions like the alarm clock and the treadmill.  Slow and steady but persistent and determined to win this battle.

When it came to letting something go, that was a bit harder to decide on but I have decided that setting myself the task of cleaning out all of the cupboards was really a bit unnecessary - my husband may not agree but hey .... there is always the Christmas holidays to tackle that one!

And here's my album.  Somehow I seem to have ended up the wrong way round but that's okay - I'll fix it up.

IMG_9970
Being a Stampin' Up! demonstrator, the little butterflies are from the Kindness Matters set and the little snail, from the Button Buddies set.  And as I started with the Love Letters DSP I thought I'd keep it going throughout this year even though it is now retired.

IMG_9972
Isn't the little snail cute - got a bit carried away with the aquapainter and Riding Hood Red ink to.

Time to hop along and visit the lovely Sam to see what battle she has chosen.

Thanks for stopping by .... and for getting to the end of this post.

Have a lovely month.
